Kenya grapples with significant public health problems due to alcohol consumption. Alcohol-related harms such as liver, and heart diseases, domestic violence, road traffic crashes, unemployment, and lost productivity disproportionately impact children, youth, women and elderly people. They strain the healthcare system and social well-being. This policy brief proposes raising health taxes on alcohol as it is the primary evidence-based strategy to reduce alcohol consumption, promote healthier lifestyles, and generate general budget revenue and specific revenue to support critical health programs.
