A Transfat Free East Africa (2022)

Industrially produced trans fats (iTFAs) are part of unhealthy diets which are foods and drinks that are high in energy (calories), sugars, salt/sodium, and fats. They are a type of unsaturated fats that come from either natural or industrial sources. iTFAs do not have a major health benefit and they are major contributors of cardiovascular diseases and noncommunicable diseases and are estimated to cause about 540,000 deaths globally each year. We recommend revision of relevant East Africa standards on food and agriculture to facilitate inclusion of iTFA limits in line with the best practice.
