The International Institute for Legislative Affairs (IILA) participated in the #IAmNotFalling – A Tobacco Industry Pushback Campaign capacity strengthening program, convened by the South African Tobacco-Free Youth Forum (SATFYF). The initiative brought together youth advocates from South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, and Zambia, beginning with virtual sessions on advocacy, communications, and leadership development. These sessions provided participants with practical skills and opportunities to share experiences on how best to counter tobacco industry influence in their countries.
The program culminated in a three-day in-person conference held from 28–30 May 2025 in Johannesburg, South Africa, where young leaders collaborated on strategies, exchanged knowledge, and built regional networks to strengthen tobacco control across Africa.
IILA’s Communications and Digital Advocacy Officer, Rose Nabwire, represented Kenya in a panel discussion where she shared insights on Kenya’s progress in tobacco control, the challenges faced, and ways to meaningfully involve youth in shaping public health advocacy. Her contribution highlighted the critical role of young people in driving change and ensuring that tobacco industry tactics targeting the youth are exposed and challenged.
IILA appreciates this platform for amplifying youth voices and remains committed to supporting regional and global efforts that champion stronger tobacco control policies, protect public health, and empower the next generation of advocates.
