Strengthening Tobacco and Niotine Tax Advocacy: IILA at KTNTC Quarterly Meeting   Author: IILA

     May 10,2025

IILA joined partners in the Kenya Tobacco and Nicotine Tax Coalition (KTNTC) for its quarterly meeting, a space that continues to foster cross-sector collaboration in pursuit of stronger tobacco control measures in Kenya. The meeting convened public health advocates, civil society organizations, and policy stakeholders committed to advancing effective tobacco and nicotine tax policies as a critical tool for reducing consumption and protecting population health.

A key focus of the discussions was the upcoming Finance Bill 2025, particularly its implications for excise tax on tobacco and nicotine products. Participants critically examined how the proposed changes might influence public health outcomes, revenue generation, and industry behavior. The coalition also outlined joint advocacy efforts planned around World No Tobacco Day and shared strategies to enhance public messaging and engagement with both policymakers and communities.

For IILA, the meeting reaffirmed the importance of sustained, evidence-based advocacy in pushing for progressive tax reforms. The team contributed insights drawn from ongoing research and campaign work, underscoring the urgency of prioritizing health over harmful commercial interests. The session concluded with a shared commitment to deepen collaboration and elevate public awareness on the risks of tobacco use and the role of taxation as a proven intervention.
