The International Institute for Legislative Affairs (IILA) participated in the launch of the 2024 Report on Substance Use Among University Students in Kenya, hosted by the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA). The report presents alarming trends in alcohol, tobacco, and drug consumption among university students, raising serious concerns about the well-being of Kenya’s youth population.
During the launch, IILA reiterated the importance of using this evidence to drive policy reforms and institutional interventions. The data shows a troubling rise in substance use, calling for urgent government and stakeholder action to protect students in tertiary institutions. IILA advocated for the adoption of stronger prevention frameworks, stricter enforcement of existing regulations, and targeted awareness programs within universities.
This engagement aligns with IILA’s long-standing commitment to promoting healthier environments through legislative and regulatory approaches. It also emphasized the organization’s role in pushing for science-backed solutions to tackle youth vulnerability and reduce the public health burden associated with substance abuse.
By participating in the launch, IILA continues to position itself at the forefront of youth-focused policy advocacy and collaborative action that supports sustainable health and education outcomes across Kenya.
