IILA participated in the East Africa Regional Dialogue on Policies to Transform Markets for Nutritious Foods. The forum, co-convened by the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC), Access to Nutrition Initiative (ATNi), and the Ministry of Health, Kenya, was held in Mombasa and brought together regional and international stakeholders.
Participants included representatives from the East African Community, World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, FAO, National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), KELIN, the NCD Alliance, academic institutions, civil society organizations, and government agencies from Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
The dialogue focused on improving food environments and strengthening policy frameworks that address unhealthy diets, a key risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs). IILA shared its ongoing advocacy around banning industrially produced trans fats (iTFAs), implementing front-of-pack warning labels (FOPWL), and restricting the marketing of ultra-processed foods to children.
IILA reaffirmed its commitment to working with regional actors to develop actionable, evidence-based nutrition policies that promote healthier diets and stronger public health outcomes across East Africa.
