IILA Advances Health Advocacy in Kenya–UAE CEPA Engagements   Author: IILA

     Jul 23, 2025

IILA was actively involved in three critical forums examining the potential impact of the Kenya–UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The discussions centered on ensuring that Kenya’s trade agreements uphold the constitutional right to health, economic equity, and public accountability.

At a strategic breakfast meeting convened by Eco News Africa, IILA joined Members of Parliament and civil society representatives to interrogate CEPA’s implications—particularly around:

    • Intellectual Property (IP) provisions that may restrict access to affordable medicines.

    • The agreement’s limited transparency and rushed legislative process.

    • Broader risks to Kenya’s fiscal health and sovereignty.

MPs emphasized their intent to scrutinize CEPA when tabled in Parliament, with the option to amend or reject under Standing Order 170. IILA also highlighted the importance of engaging with cross-sectoral committees—including Trade, ICT, and Finance—to address emerging concerns like virtual assets, digital taxation, and economic resilience.

As part of a wider legislative push, IILA continues to advocate for inclusive, evidence-informed trade policies that protect public health, promote fair taxation, and respect constitutional safeguards
