IILA was honored to join the Ministry of Health-led World No Tobacco Day commemoration in Uasin Gishu County, where our Programmes Manager, Ken Marau, represented us.

The Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale presided over the event, reaffirming Kenya’s commitment in protecting youth from tobacco and emerging nicotine products. Key highlights included:

    • 5.5 tonnes of illicit tobacco products were destroyed, sending a clear message on the enforcement of tobacco control laws.
    • 17 new graphic health warnings were launched.
    • A youth-focused awareness campaign was rolled out in collaboration with the County Government.
    • Hon. Duale highlighted the government’s efforts to shield public health policies from industry influence.
    • Suspension of all nicotine product licenses from May 31, 2025; entities must reapply within 21 days to ensure compliance and protect youth from targeted marketing.

As partners in Tobacco Control, we reaffirm the importance of fully implementing Article 5.3 of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC). Upholding this article is essential to ensure that public health policies are protected from commercial and other vested interests of the tobacco industry.

The theme of the day, "Unmasking the Appeal: Exposing Industry Tactics on Tobacco and Nicotine Products," highlights the importance of exposing deceptive marketing, holding the industry accountable, and safeguarding the next generation from addiction.
